The wind was up a bit, the course was in good shape and their was some fine golf played prior to our annual shindig after party. The Champ Flight saw new comer Jeff Sullivan show that he will be a force all year with a dominate round of 75 from the tips to secure his first victory in his first event. Actuall the race for second place was a bit tighter than that for first as Stephen Kauble continued his solid play with a nice round of 82 on this difficult day to secure second place by a shot over Matt McInnis. It was as the direct spin-off of the Azalea Invitational dating back to As the field was gradually cut from to players, many of the good old boys that had been coming here for years, enjoying a Charleston vacation plus the fun tournament, were crying for the old days and some sort of venue to get back to Old Wappoo as it was called. Alan and Tim ran The Senior Azalea for eleven years and through their efforts, a newly renovated golf course, and the ever growing popularity of Charleston as a vacation destination, they developed a very good field and nationally recognized senior amateur event! Golf Week in initiated its senior rankings for the country and placed the Senior Azalea high on the list of point distribution thus validating the strength of its fields and the quality of the tournament. The Charleston Country Club can trace its roots back to golf in Charleston as far back as The formal club was organized in and moved to its current location in In that year the club engaged Seth Raynor to design and build the golf course.
Swan and Layden both finished the tournament with the top overall scores, finishing regulation with matching 8-under-par scores for a cumulative score of , before the playoff determined the champion.
