Self improvement is masturbation. We are scared, because that is how society has conditioned us. We are stressed; we lock ourselves up and surround ourselves with shit from Ikea. We pretend to maintain an identity and self-esteem that we carve out based upon a gag of materialism and social norms.

Why can't we just be men? How do we be men? How can the AFC be a man? Well, he just programs the beliefs of an alpha male into his own subconscious, once it's there, he'll think, act, and behave like an alpha male without even knowing he's doing it.
A bold statement, and because the movie is so frequently misunderstood and misinterpreted, probably a fairly unpopular statement too. Fight Club is one of the few films I have watched more than once. What Tyler is saying is that society has instilled some values in most people that are way off the mark.
I do believe in personal development and improving constantly as a person. Hell, I make a living out of it! But, I also believe that a lot of the people who are into personal development have a skewed vision about it and an ineffective approach. Some of my best friends are into personal development and I really appreciate them for that.
