Situated on a section of coastline, the longest such section on the West Coast of the United States. Santa Barbaras climate is described as Mediterranean, and the city has been promoted as the American Riviera. The population of the county in was , Education in particular is well represented, with four institutions of learning on the south coast. Evidence of human habitation of the area begins at least 13, years ago, an estimated 8, to 10, Chumash lived on the south coast of Santa Barbara County at the time of the first European explorations. Cabrillos earlier name, however, is the one that has survived, the first permanent European residents were Spanish missionaries and soldiers under Felipe de Neve, who came in to build the Presidio.
